Haute Couture Evening Dress, ca. 1924 – Black Chiffon, Polished Stone Embroidery & Sculptural Belt

Construction & Materials

This Haute Couture evening dress, dating to ca. 1924 and originating from England, is an exceptional example of early Art Deco couture. Crafted from black chiffon, the antique dress is richly embroidered across the sleeves, bust, skirt, and especially the waist area.

The waist is a true eye‑catcher: a wide, all‑round belt with a large sculptural “belt buckle”, fully embroidered with polished black stones. The chest features sun‑ray‑shaped embroidery, adding dramatic movement and geometric elegance typical of 1920s evening fashion.

A cotton undergarment was worn beneath this overdress, as was customary for couture chiffon garments of the period.

Historical Context & Fashion Significance

Around 1924, English couture embraced bold embellishment, sheer fabrics, and architectural silhouettes. Dresses like this — chiffon‑based, heavily embroidered, and featuring sculptural waist elements — represent the height of Haute Couture craftsmanship during the Jazz Age.

Its polished stone embroidery, geometric motifs, and refined construction make it ideal for collectors of antique dresses, 1920s couture, and museum‑quality garments.

Condition

The dress is preserved in very good to excellent condition, with only two small flaws typical for antique chiffon garments of this age. Decorative items shown in photographs are not included.
