Historical Context & Provenance
This black silk velvet jacket, dating to around 1918, is a refined example of late Edwardian to early 1920s fashion. It bears the label “Hutzler Brothers Co., Baltimore”, a well‑known American department store founded in the mid‑19th century and celebrated for its high‑quality garments. The jacket comes from the historic Collection of A.T. Jones & Sons, a renowned American costuming company with a long tradition of preserving theatrical and period clothing.
Material & Design
The jacket is crafted from black silk velvet, giving it a rich, deep surface with natural sheen. It features a heavily ruched shawl collar and cuffs, adding dramatic volume and texture. The front closes with two flat jet buttons, positioned at the center front. Inside, the jacket is lined in crepe‑back silk satin, a luxurious material typical of high‑end garments from the period.
Condition
The jacket is in very good condition, with a few minor flaws: damaged inner ties, staining to the lining, and slight crushing to the velvet in places. These signs are consistent with age and do not affect wearability. Decoration not included. Still fully wearable today, this piece is an elegant and historically meaningful garment.
