Victorian Golf Cape, ca. 1890s – Navy Wool, Multicolour Checks & Brass Button Closure

Construction & Materials

This cheerful Victorian golf cape, made of double navy blue wool fabric with alternating red, green, navy blue and cream check patterns, is a refined example of late 19th‑century sporting outerwear. The cape features fringes on the shoulder pieces and along the front opening, adding movement and visual interest.

It was worn by ladies playing golf, one of the few sports considered appropriate for women in the 1890s. The cape includes an adjustable collar and a shaped tab closure with brass buttons at the front and back of the neck. A hook‑and‑eye closure secures the neckline.

Condition is described as excellent, with light wear, small tears, moderately tarnished buttons, and one loose button — all age‑appropriate for an authentic sporting garment of this period.

Historical Context & Fashion Significance

In the 1890s, golf was one of the few sports practiced by ladies. Women played in elegant clothing — long skirts and tailored blouses — which often restricted freedom of movement. In autumn, capes were worn over these garments to protect against cold and wet weather.

Despite restrictive dress norms, golf enjoyed growing popularity among women, many of whom demonstrated remarkable skill and enthusiasm. This cape is a rare surviving example of Victorian women’s sportswear, combining practicality with fashionable detailing.
