Princess‑Style Wedding Dress, ca. 1879 – Cream Damask, Floral Rosettes & American Label A.M. Vail
Construction & Materials
This elegant one‑piece wedding dress, dating to ca. 1879, is made in the classic princess style and carries the American label A.M. Vail, 219 West 53rd St. The antique dress is crafted from cream damask with a floral motif, giving it the rich texture and sculptural drape characteristic of late 1870s bustle‑era fashion.
A small stand‑up collar trimmed with tulle ruffles frames the neckline. Tulle also appears on the cuffs of the long sleeves, applied externally for added dimension. The bodice closes at the front with buttons and is reinforced with corset stays on the inside — typical for high‑quality American dressmaking of the period.
The front skirt features pleated satin‑silk, accented by two rows of contrasting rosettes arranged like flowers. The hem, ending in a long train, is set in small pleats and finished on the inside with lace, now showing some age‑related tears likely caused by dancing.
A wide attached belt ends in a bow at the back, completing the silhouette.
Condition
The dress is very well preserved, with age‑appropriate imperfections:
-
light soiling at the edge of the train
-
some tears in the lace inside the hem
-
a small hole in the front area
-
very few tiny spots
Decorative items shown in photographs are not included.
Historical Context & Fashion Significance
Around 1879, the princess line became a defining silhouette of late Victorian fashion. Dresses were cut in long, uninterrupted panels, creating a smooth, elongated shape without a separate waist seam. This example — with its damask fabric, satin‑silk pleating, floral rosettes, and bustle‑era train — is a refined representation of American wedding attire during the late 19th century.
Its craftsmanship, preserved structure, and decorative detailing make it ideal for collectors of antique dresses, Victorian textiles, and museum‑quality garments.
