Biedermeier Stomacher, Germany, ca. 1840
Mid‑19th‑Century Stomachers and Biedermeier Dressmaking
This rare stomacher for a Biedermeier dress, dating to ca. 1840, is a beautifully preserved example of mid‑19th‑century German fashion. Stomachers of this period served as decorative front panels worn with bodices, continuing a tradition that had evolved from Baroque and Rococo splendour into the more restrained, domestic aesthetics of the Biedermeier era.
Cream Lace, Red Ground and Nile‑Blue Silk Bows
This example features cream‑coloured lace set against a vivid red background, creating a striking contrast typical of the era’s refined yet expressive textile combinations. It is further embellished with nile‑blue silk bows, all of which appear original, along with the original fastening ribbons. The reverse side displays a typical Biedermeier cotton fabric, confirming its authenticity. The stomacher retains its conical form, echoing earlier 18th‑century silhouettes while adapting to the softer lines of 1840s dressmaking.
Condition Report: Biedermeier Textile Preservation
The piece is very well preserved, showing only discreet stains and light wear — entirely appropriate for its age. A closely related example is held in the Manchester Art Gallery, underscoring the rarity and cultural value of such accessories.
Collecting Significance: 19th‑Century Dress Accessories
